Front Row Seat to a Runway show? There’s an app for that.

09.2.2010

Social Media during New York Fashion Week is the chic must-have of the season. There are too many apps, tweets and blogs to count that are focusing on this one week of runway shows, after-parties and all of the exciting drama in between (tickets, seating arrangements and maps to all the shows).

Some of the top names in fashion (Donna Karan and Ralph Lauren, to name a few) are giving fashionistas all over the globe a front row seat (and backstage pass) to the shows by creating custom iPhone apps to keep everyone in the know. With the click of a button you have access to behind the scenes footage, looks straight from the runway and you can shop whenever you’d like!

And it’s not just designers – websites such as Style.com will have exclusive live images of runway shows, after parties and all the juicy gossip. Lucky Magazine teamed up with FourSquare to give tips on the best places to visit and a list of 700 stores in the magazines directory.  It seems as though everyone is taking Fashion Week to the next level of tech.

This Week in Awesome

08.27.2010

This week the weather in NYC did its best to remind us to enjoy summer, with a Monday and Tuesday straight out of mid-October. Best hit the beach and make it to a few cookouts in the next week; summer’s over, kids.

Regardless, we had more interesting stuff going on this week than just dreary weather. For starters, Barracuda-rockers Heart answered MOG.com readers’ love and music questions. Need to charm that special someone? Lost that special songwriting spark? They’ll help you out.

For you fashionistas out there, the second annual Fashion’s Night Out was announced this week with an enthusiastic PSA that was released this week featuring all of fashions top models. This year’s event takes place on September 10th. Not in New York? This year the event is going to be taking place in 16 different countries all to support the shops and fashion in their market. You can follow FNO over on Twitter.

Next week marks the release of the 40th anniversary reissue of Miles Davis’ landmark album Bitches Brew, and Josh, our resident jazz fanatic, is stoked. Huge Miles fans themselves, Dogfishhead Brewery are commemorating the album by releasing their own Bitches Brew Ale, which Slashfood and NY Press named as the “Beer of the Week.” We’re anxious to give it a taste while listening to “Miles Runs the Voodoo Down.”

This weekend, we’re looking forward to checking out Make Out with Violence, an indie film from Nashville that’s opening up down the street at the reRun Gastropub. As one of Apex’s resident former Tennesseans, I’m all about supporting Music City where possible. NY Times‘s review summed up the plot to the coming-of-age/zombie flick (common pairing, right?) pretty perfectly, and check out the trailer below.

Filled with clear, bright images and moments of skewed genius, this delicate debut effortlessly evokes those languid summer doldrums, when even a rotting girlfriend is better than no girlfriend at all.

Update: Um… oh yeah, that Star Wars Uncut thing that I was in that got nominated for an Emmy for Creative Achievement in Interactive Media –  Fiction? It kinda sorta won. Massive crazy-huge congrats to the SW Uncut team: Casey Pugh, Annelise Pruitt, Jamie Wilkinson, Chad Pugh, Aaron Valdez, Bryan Pugh, and Justin Hanney. I’ve never been prouder to serve as a mustachioed Princess Leia.

Temple St. Clair Premieres Fall Line – The Odyssey Collection

08.2.2010

Temple St. Clair, one of our favorite jewelers, just premiered pieces from her upcoming fall line entitled the Odyssey Collection. She drew her inspiration for the pieces from the Persian Empire and the Mediterranean - think something you might find “in a modern Helen of Troy’s jewel box,” as Temple so succinctly puts it.

Based on her signature materials of 18k gold and royal blue moonstones, the collection also includes pieces with rock crystal, aquamarine, peridot, emeralds and rubies. Check out JustLuxe.com‘s preview of the fall line, and head to Temple’s Facebook page for more images of this gorgeous collection.

This Week in Awesome

07.23.2010

The week started off not so awesome for Apex because we were without Davis, who was in Chicago at the Pitchfork Music Festival, clearly having an awesome time without us.

But, outside of the office our clients had some awesome happenings as well. The winners of OurStage.com‘s “Shout it out with HANSON” competition were announced! Check out the lucky 23 artists who will open for Hanson at their local tour stop here. Meanwhile, Isaac Hanson took some time out to teach you how to play “Thinking ‘Bout Somethin” on UltimateGuitar.tv.

Heart’s new album, Red Velvet Car is available for pre-sale on Amazon.com! Wooo! We’re all anxious for it’s arrival on August 31.

Outside of music, legendary shoe designer Walter Steiger came New York City this week. We talked about the upcoming line and arranged an interview with The Daily Obsession, which will post in the upcoming weeks. His Fall 2010 collection posted to WalterSteiger.com this week as well. If you have severe shoe lust, you’ll want to click that link.

On a more personal level, Gabo’s roommates moved out. He’s a little lonely but mostly enjoying the privacy until his new roomies get here in August. I think he misses having people to bicker with because he and Davis have been arguing like teenage girls. Davis bought tickets to Guided by Voices‘ sold out show, and Gabo is mad at him for not getting him one. Can we say office drama? They buried the hatchet this afternoon though, they even shook hands.

In the world outside of the Internet, Darth Vader robbed a Long Island bank and a cyberbullying expert was bullied off Good Morning America. She was supposed to film a follow- up to yesterday’s report on 11-year-old cyberbullying victim Jessi Slaughter, but a “harassment campaign by 4Chan users discouraged GMA‘s cyberbullying expert from going back on.” For those of you uninitiated with the wonders/horrors of 4Chan, just stay away. Read their updated rules for yesterday, and then realize the exact opposite is the norm for the site.

And on a lighter note, The Harvard Sailing Team posted a new “Boys Will be Girls” video, that basically made me ROFL all over the office. You can see that one below.

Louis Vuitton’s Gift To 5th Ave

11.7.2008

louis-5th-ave.jpg

Louis Vuitton, never one to shy away from public displays of art and luxuriousness, is pulling out all the stops for the holiday shopping season.

They’ve hired Mr. Takashi Murakami to gift wrap their 5th Ave store – because they wanted to do something ‘truly unique for the holiday season’.

Yeah, I think they did it.

Construction starts today and should be done on Sunday.

Sex and the City Trailers Are Boring!

05.20.2008

Like most other girls on the planet, I’m looking forward to the new Sex and the City movie.

I was excited when I heard some SATC trailers popped up on YouTube, except that when I watched they clips…well, needless to say, I was underwhelmed.

Oh well. It’s probably because I feel like I’ve already seen the movie, what with all the papparazi shots and coverage it’s received so far.

Website You Have To Check Out: Trendinista

04.23.2008

I stumbled upon Trendinista and immediately fell in love with the site! It’s run by Jill Sherman, a fashion industry girl who’s got an incredible eye for detail, which you can obviously see by how she described the following designers’ collections…

trendista2.jpg
The Diana Bobar collection reminds her of the endangered Wild Cyclamen, a tubular Mediterranian flower with breezy, spiral petals.

trendista12.jpg
Rodarte’s fall/winter 2008 collection reminded her of siamese fighting fish swimming down the runway.

trendista3.jpg
Elie Saab’s fall/winter 2008 collection reminded her of traditional Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) folk art.

trendista4.jpg
“Oh, you know, it reminded me of “nebula”, the interstellar clouds of dust, hydrogen gas, and plasma that eventually form stars and planets,” said Sherman as she descibed the Ritsuko Shirahama Fall 08 Collection.

…I mean, nebulas, seriously?! Genius.

CNN Turns Headlines Into $15 Shirts

04.23.2008

gawker-cnn-tshirt.jpg

Ever geeked out so hard on a news headline that you wanted to make it into a shirt and wear it around town? No? …didn’t think so. But just in case you have, now you can.

CNN has finally! made it possible for you to purchase tshirts with your current favorite video headlines on it.

Here’s what CNN’s VP of interactive marketing, Andy Mitchell, had to say about it: “The project arose from a brief to build awareness and drive traffic to the organization’s online video offerings and communicate that the site houses more than just news videos.”

Umm, I actually think this is kind of cool, although I don’t think I’d ever buy one, except for maybe the one I posted above…which is a fake CNN shirt from a Gawker contest.

Awesome, right? Cops would love me!

Oh La La! Win Clothes From The Elizabeth and James Spring Collection!

03.24.2008

therow.jpg

I love clothes and for whatever reason, I haven’t blogged much about fashion so far, but I think that’s going to change.

That said, I am no fashion snob. But I do know a pretty dress when I see one and these dresses are pretty!

The lovely people at FabSugar are giving away 2 dresses from The Elizabeth and James Collection (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s clothing line), to one super lucky winner.

I don’t even know why I’m posting about this, because you entering to win will lower my chances of winning…and I’d really like to win.

So ummm, don’t enter to win here!!
