Poker Player Beth Shak’s “Lucky” Walter Steiger Shoes

06.23.2010

Professional poker player Beth Shak found something better than a lucky rabbit’s foot to get her through the World Series of Poker this year. Her lucky charm is renowned shoe designer Walter Steiger, and she found him on Park Avenue in New York City.

Just days before boarding a plane for Las Vegas, Beth received a one-of-a-kind pair of Walter Steiger Muse pumps. These bright pink babies are sky-high with her signature black spade stitched onto each heel. We’re not the only ones who think these heels are killer, multiple luxury sites, shoe blogs and poker sites posted about Beth’s lucky shoes as well.

Now, after a week-long break, Beth is returning to the World Series of Poker until July 5 to finish up the tournament. Wondering if these shoes are really lucky? Follow Beth’s WSOP updates on Bullz-Eye.com to find out. If you’re more interested in the fashion and luxury hot spots Beth is hitting while off the poker floor, you can follow her luxury tweets on JustLuxe.com‘s Las Vegas City Guide page.

Guitar Hero Christmas Lights

12.15.2009

This is why Mashable is such an awesome blog.

21,000+ Christmas lights and Guitar Hero makes for one Apexer sick to his stomach with envy. This is so rad I don’t even know where to start.

Read the story about how this whole thing was put together over at Mashable.

iTunes Heads for the Clouds

12.10.2009

That was quick! Fresh on the heels of the LaLa purchase, Apple apparently has plans to put iTunes on the cloud. No more downloading iTunes or songs. Users will be able to simply login and start buying/listening to music.

It’ll be interesting to see how this works out with AT&T. They recently starting whining about people who’ve purchased unlimited data plans for their iPhones using lots of data. iTunes streaming content sounds like a lot of bandwidth to me.

Taddy Porter – “Big Enough”

12.3.2009

taddy-porter-promo-1-edit.jpg

Stillwater, OK rockers Taddy Porter are working on breaking out into the music biz, and we’re positive their brand of Southern badass rock and roll is going to take them far. Imagine if Led Zeppelin had grown up on southern cooking, or if AC/DC were from OKC.

They’re offering their track “Big Enough” for free download over at BandCamp, but you should also check out this live performance of “Railroad Queen.” Definitely a band to keep an eye on in 2010.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

04.1.2009

The fantastic folks at Quirk Books were kind enough to send a copy of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies our way, and while I haven’t gotten a chance to finish it, I can certainly say it’s everything I’d hoped it could be. I hate to use such a cliche line, but in this case, you really can judge a book by its cover. The scenes of Victorian English romance and social drama mesh surprisingly well with vicious attacks by the decomposing undead.

I’ll admit I’m not crazy about Jane Austen, but how can you not love passages like this:

His brother-in-law, Mr. Hurst, merely looked the gentleman; but his friend Mr. Darcy soon drew the attention of the room by his fine, tall person, handsome features, noble mien – and the report which was in circulation within five minutes of his entrance, of his having slaughtered more than a thousand unmentionables since the fall of Cambridge.

The book’s currently sold out on Quirk Book’s page, but Amazon’s still got it.

It’s Mid-December Already?

12.16.2008

If you’re feeling a bit behind on all of your Festivus shopping this year (and happen to be located in Dumbo, like us), you might want to check out the Dumbo NYC blog’s list of all of the specials and sales currently running in the neighborhood.

I kind of want to head over to Halcyon and shout, “Economic Crisis… Fuggetaboutit,” not because it’s a cool record shop or that saying that’ll give me 10% off… I just want to do it.

“I Will Not Be Ashamed”

06.30.2008

Ahhh, the dreaded walk of shame. Some of you people know it all too well!

But thanks to this new(ish) commercial for AMP Energy drink, you don’t have to be ashamed anymore when you make that wrinkled, disheveled, hungover walk home!

This is one of the best commercials I’ve seen in a long time and all I can say is that AMP (and BBDO) certainly knows who their target demographic is!

Generation X vs. The Millennials

05.23.2008

ROUND 1: Robert Lanham from FreeWilliamsburg wrote an interesting article for Radar about Gen Xers (born between 1961-81) needing to band together against us ‘crybaby’ Millennials (1982-2002). The article is called “Generation Slap: They’re naive, self-important, and perpetually plugged in. This is a call to arms against Millennials” and I suggest you read it.

ROUND 2: Alex Pareen from Gawker, and a fellow millennial, wasn’t too happy with what Lanham had to say, so he wrote this article called “Get Off the Stage: One Millenial responds to Gen X’s Discontents,” for Radar, defending his generation.

And finally…

ROUND 3: Lanham posted this on FREEwilliamsburg, in regards to Pareen’s rebuttal.

This was an interesting look at the generation gap and thought I’d share. Thoughts?

A-Framing

05.21.2008

aframes.jpg

Somehow this has never registered with me, but now that I see this, it’s blatant. A great piece from PRINT Magazine on the overuse of “cutoff-torso-spread-leg” as a framing device for posters, album art, etc.

And all this time I thought that National Lampoon’s Class Reunion was being original and thought-provoking with its ground breaking poster art.

Afternoon Jam – Cool Kids

05.21.2008

coolkids.jpg

I caught a set from The Cool Kids at this year’s CMJ, and from what I can remember, they put on a killer set (hey, the bar had $1 Colt 45 and well… figure it out, alright?), so I’m happy to hear their debut EP, The Bake Sale, is out now on iTunes.

Snag the radio version of “88″ from the EP for free on iTunes right here to get some killer 80′s throwback hip-hop.
