In a digital twist of the old 7″ singles clubs (”pay us a bunch of money now, and we’ll send you a bunch of stuff that we promise will be cool”), Depeche Mode have just announced they’re releasing their new album Sounds of the Universe as an iTunes Pass subscription.
$19 gets you the album when it comes out, as well as exclusive singles, remixes, and videos, all DRM-free. Not a bad price, if you’re a massive David Gahan fan.
Just another example of what I love about digital distribution: with no physical product to worry about, artists are able to release anything they think their fans will be into.

In the world of iLikes, Last.fm, MySpace pages, and whatever other ways to get music from bands, it’s rare to see an official page of an artist get everything so right. Phoenix’s page for their new single “1901″ is stellar.
Great music, well-designed, and it accomplished what it set out for: I was vaguely familiar with the band, but I’ll certainly be waiting for the album to drop now. Click here for free (French!) jams.

(It’s taken Apex awhile to get over the fact that it’s actually 2009. We’ll get back to our regularly scheduled blogging about new music, videos of kittens, and cool gadgets. You can thank us later.)

If you’re feeling a bit behind on all of your Festivus shopping this year (and happen to be located in Dumbo, like us), you might want to check out the Dumbo NYC blog’s list of all of the specials and sales currently running in the neighborhood.
I kind of want to head over to Halcyon and shout, “Economic Crisis… Fuggetaboutit,” not because it’s a cool record shop or that saying that’ll give me 10% off… I just want to do it.

Today, Microsoft unveiled the New Xbox Experience (or NXE for short), which basically amounts to a new menu system for the Xbox, but with Netflix streaming and a dash of the Mii characters from the Nintendo Wii added in for good measure. It’s pretty cool, and a much-needed improvement.
But yesterday, Microsoft also sent out a press release about the NXE that… well… I’ll just let you read the beginning paragraph.
In 1954, the introduction of color TV heralded the dawn of a new era in entertainment. On Nov. 19, more than 50 years after that dramatic shift, a new era in home entertainment begins with the New Xbox Experience as millions of Xbox 360™ consoles will transform instantly through the power of software. A bold new future begins now, where high definition entertainment is delivered in an instant, the best games share the stage with the best movies, and every experience is shared with friends and families, in the same room or around the world.
…Seriously? I can understand the difficulty in finding a great angle for a press release, but I think someone over-shot the mark by a bit with this one. Yes, the Xbox is cool. Yes, NXE is cool. But I’m not going to be bowled over that it’s a little easier to find my Xbox Live games and watch Escape from New York whenever I want.
Then again, having Escape from New York on-demand, all the time might just be the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Snake Plissken is pretty badass.

“It’s racist. It’s totally racist...everyone is just so shocked that I don’t like R&B. Why does R&B keep coming into my interviews? It’s pissing me off. I didn’t grow up as a big fan of R&B and, like, what is the big shocker? It’s stupid.”
-Santogold, on her pop single “Lights Out” being classified as ‘HipHop/R&B’.

Some modder hacked an old, obscure PDA and jammed the entirety of Wikipedia in it. Now you can simultaneously impress and slightly weird out your friends with your immense knowledge. The “Don’t Panic” screen on the front completes the nerdy package. Sure, you could have your fancy wifi-enabled phone do pretty much the same thing, but that’s A) taking the easy way out and B) not nearly this cool.
Though I guess when it comes to Wikipedia in your pocket, nothing really beats this guy.

Sometimes I wish that logos, in addition to showing you a company’s name, also gave you an idea as to what kind of service they provided. In an age where new websites are launching at an enormous rate, why can’t they just tell us what they do rather than actually make us look at the site?
Thankfully, College Humor is here to help us out with their list of more accurate website logos.
In the same spirit, I’ve made a more accurate version of our logo that I think represents us better than our current one.

I just read on Gawker (and then verified my findings on Gothamist) that MTV’s The Real World will most definitely be coming to Brooklyn this summer to film the 21st season of the show (and the 3rd in NYC).
“The Brooklyn season, like the Hollywood season, will focus on what people loved about ‘The Real World’ when it launched in 1992 – genuine people, meaningful conflict and powerful stories,” said co-creator Jon Murray.
Oh please. What Jon really means is that you can expect yet another booze filled, drug addled, sex having, bitch fighting, self hating, guilty pleasure season of reality trash TV! Yesssss!
Oh, and MTV hasn’t said what neighborhood they’ll be ruining yet, so just sit tight for that announcement!
I’m holding out hope that though the Real Worlders may be living in BK (and hopefully not in my neighborhood!), they’ll be playing in Manhattan (fingers crossed).
